The Spit on the
Gold Coast,
Queensland, is located 10 minutes north of
Surfers Paradise, between the Gold Coast
Broadwater and the ocean.
Also known as Southport Spit, the formation of this barrier was a direct result of Stradbroke Island being split into two after a series of storms in 1896, which in turn changed the ebb and flow of tides through Moreton Bay. This permanent south isthmus was developed into permanent landform and today, the Spit is home to
Sea World, the Sheraton Mirage Resort and Spa, as well as Palazzo Versace. Adjacent to The Spit is the Gold Coast Sand Pumping Jetty, a popular destination for fishermen and part of the Gold Coast Seaway's Sand Bypassing System.
