Tinaroo, in Tropical
North Queensland is situated 90km west of Cairns on the beautiful
Atherton Tablelands. To guarantee a regular water supply to this important agricultural region,
Lake Tinaroo was born by the damming of the Barron River for local tobacco farming and the Barron Gorge Hydro–Electricity Station. Not long after, the small settlement of Tinaroo sprung up on the shores of the huge artificial lake.
The town takes its name from a creek where John Atherton found tin and gold in 1878. Lake Tinaroo has over 200km of shoreline and boasts all year round Barramundi and Red claw fishing, swimming and waterspouts, and bird watching. It is now one of the three largest water storages in
Queensland.
