Warwick was the Darling Downs’ first town, established in 1840 on the banks of the Condamine River, and is known as the 'Rose and Rodeo City’. Warwick gets this title from the red City of Warwick rose (Arofuto) which grows prolifically in the area, and from the annual Warwick Rodeo where roughriders from all over the country compete each October. This rodeo was the first of its kind ever held in Australia; the first professional buckjumping contest was held here in 1857.
Strategically located at the junction of major highways from Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, Warwick is the main service centre for the rich pastures of the Southern Downs, which produce some of Australia’s finest wool and grain. The area is also noted for its fruit and vegetables, timber, dairy products and wineries. Warwick’s heritage buildings are quite striking – a result of the tasteful use of sandstone and the extensive construction which was undertaken as the town grew in the 1880s and 1890s. The local Aborigines knew the area as Gooragooby.
History
Warwick lays claim to be the first major inland settlement in
Queensland and Warwick experiened rapid development due to Cobb & Co's coach services to the township in 1865. By 1871 the railway from Ipswich had reached the town which resulted in a boom in local industry.
