Yorkeys Knob Accommodation & Travel Information
Yorkeys Knob is one of the several beach-side suburbs of Cairns, in Tropical North Queensland and is considered to be one of the best northern beach locations for fishing.
Yorkeys Knob's peculiar name comes from spirited pioneer George Lawson, known as “Yorkey” and the knob-like hill which he bought in the 1800’s. Yorkey, from Yorkshire in England, was a fisherman and smuggler who made and drank a fortune and lost an arm whilst dynamite fishing. He died in 1907, a caretaker of Green Island.
Separated from Holloways Beach by a narrow channel and a large sand bar, Yorkeys Knob is much larger and surf-prone than its southerly counterparts because of the south easterly winds, making it popular for watersports such as jet skiing windsurfing and kite surfing. Yorkeys is home to many Cairns residents but is now developing into a tourist location.
The estuarine creek at the southern end of the beach is great for fishing, and it is possible to walk out to sea for dozens of metres along the sand bar at low tide.
