The commercial centre of the
Riverland region, Berri is 227km north east of
Adelaide. As one of the Riverlands' irrigation areas, Berri is noted as a wine-making, fruit-growing and processing centre. It has a major shopping centre and the largest winery and distillery complex in the southern hemisphere, Berri Estates.
Berri takes its name from the Aboriginal word 'beri beri', meaning 'bend in the river'. Originally part of Cobdogla Station, Berri served as a mooring place and wood-refuelling stop for the paddle-steamers and barges that plied the Murray River during the early days of pastoral settlement.
