Ceduna is set on Murat Bay, which has many sandy coves, sheltered bays and offshore islands. It is an ideal base for swimming, diving, fishing, waterskiing, windsurfing and boating. Ceduna is also the gateway to the Nullarbor and the hub of a large cereal-growing area.
The first Europeans to see the coastline near Ceduna were the Dutch sailors who accompanied Pieter Nuyts in his 1627 voyage across the Great Australian Bight. The first European settlement in the Ceduna area was founded in the 1840s on the shores of Denial Bay, an area that had been explored by Matthew Flinders in 1802. Here, provisions for the early pioneers were unloaded from cargo ships that could anchor close to shore. At low tide, wagons were able to transport the goods to shore at McKenzie's Landing, the remains of which are still standing. Ceduna's Denial Bay is now famous for its oyster farms.
