Cockatoo Valley is a small village off the Barossa Highway south of Sandy Creek, between
Gawler and
Lyndoch. The Cockatoo Valley area played host to thousands of fortune hunters when gold fever flared briefly here in the 19th century. Gold was discovered in the Cockatoo Valley in 1868 and within weeks about 2000 people had rushed to the area. Wardens of Goldfields and police troopers were dispatched to issue gold licenses and settle disputes.
Later, this gold site attracted another 4000 people and the township of
Barossa was quickly established, consisting of a narrow lane of stores and hotels. An institute and school were added later and the township survived until the 1950s. The remnants of the goldfields and the town, confined within the Para Wirra National Park, are one of the main attractions of the area.
