The small town of Coonawarra is the site of the original winery in one of
Australia's finest wine districts. The first vines were planted in Coonawarra in 1891 by Penola pastoralist John Riddoch, who established the Coonawarra Fruit Colony. His own winery later became the famous Wynns Coonawarra Estate, one of over 20 wineries now operating in the district.
Today the Coonawarra district is renowned for its award-winning reds and attracts wine lovers from all over the country. This compact wine-producing area covers a strip of land just 2km wide and 12km long on the road between
Penola and
Naracoorte.
