The Fleurieu Peninsula was named by Matthew Flinders and Nicholas Baudin in 1802, after the eminent French wanderer, Charles Pierre Claret, Comte de Fleurieu. Its Mediterranean climate, coastal views, surf and swimming beaches and thriving arts community make the Fleurieu Peninsula a popular holiday destination.
Locally grown and produced food and wine is served at many fine restaurants and cellar doors in
McLaren Vale, Langhorne Creek, and
Clarendon. The Fleurieu Peninsula is also famous for its nature trails including the first leg of the famous Heyson Trail, which starts at
Cape Jervis and ends 1500km to the north, in the
Flinders Ranges. From June to October, southern right whales can be seen off
Middleton Beach near Victor Harbor. The Fleurieu Peninsula is a great travel destination if you're keen to relax and explore the magnificent coast.
