Hahndorf is a major tourist destination with strong German heritage. This well-preserved town is characterised by beautiful, shady, tree-lined streets, advertisements and shop signs in Teutonic script, and cafés, bars and restaurants run by the descendants of Hahndorf's early German settlers.
Promoted as Australia's oldest surviving German settlement, Hahndorf was established in 1839 by about 50 Lutheran families who fled Prussian persecution, emigrating to Adelaide aboard the Zebra. They named their new home in honour of the ship's captain, Hahn, who helped them obtain land on arrival. During World War I Hahndorf was affected by anti-German sentiment and its name was changed to Ambleside, reverting to Hahndorf in 1935.
