Nuriootpa means 'meeting place', which dates back to its role as a place of barter by Aboriginal tribes before European settlement. This substantial and rapidly growing town is recognised as the commercial centre of the
Barossa Valley and services over 40 wineries in the area.
Nuriootpa has an abundance of accommodation and restaurants, shopping facilities and one of
Australia's largest winemaking complexes. A feature of Nuriootpa is its picturesque main street, with vines growing on both old and new buildings. Nuriootpa evolved around the red gum slab hotel built by William Coulthard. The hotel has gone, but his home has been preserved and serves as the main information centre for the Barossa Valley. The founder's name is also honoured by Coulthard Reserve, a popular picnic spot.
