Port Augusta Travel Guide

Established in 1854, Port Augusta came into being because of its shipping potential for the early pastoralists and miners of the northern areas. It is located 308km north of
Adelaide and is a genuine crossroads, with roads heading north to
Alice Springs and
Darwin, west to the
Nullarbor, south-west to the
Eyre Peninsula and south-east to Adelaide.
A thriving industrial city at the head of Spencer Gulf and in the shadow of the Flinders Ranges, Port Augusta is the most northerly port in
South Australia and the supply centre for the Outback areas and the large sheep stations of the district. Port Augusta has played a part in the state's development since the Electricity Trust built major power stations here. Fuelled by coal from the huge open-cut mines at Leigh Creek, the stations generate more than a third of South Australia's electricity. Port Augusta is also a major railway centre - the famous Ghan train leaves from Port Augusta for Alice Springs, while the Indian-Pacific train, which travels between
Perth and
Sydney, also passes through Port Augusta.
