The small town of Tintinara, on the Dukes Highway, is promoted as the 'Heart of the Parks', being central to ten national parks. Tintinara is situated in what was once known as the 'Ninety Mile Desert' because of its poor sandy soils and the low mallee/heath vegetation interspersed with swampy flats. With improved drainage and the addition of trace elements, the Tintinara district has become a productive farming area.
The Tintinara area was settled in the 1840s when graziers moved into the district with substantial flocks of sheep. In the 1950s it became a regular watering point on the track between
Adelaide and the Mount Alexander goldfields in
Victoria. This part of Tintinara's history is preserved in the Tintinara Homestead, ten kilometres away on the original town site, with an old shearing shed and shearers' quarters, and a post office.
