Williamstown, 50km from
Adelaide, is just past a high country vineyard between Chain of Pounds in the
Adelaide Hills and the
Barossa town of
Lyndoch. The picturesque location of Williamstown justifies its description as the Scenic Southern Gateway of the Barossa. Scenic drives, bushwalks and gem fossicking all add to the beauty of the town.
Williamstown is located in the wettest and coolest part of the Barossa Valley, with a climate affected by its proximity to the Barossa Ranges. Williamstown fruit is highly regarded by winemakers and has regularly been a major component in award-winning wines.
The first person to settle at Williamstown was Thomas Adams, who called the place Victoria Creek. The original Victoria Creek Hotel served the labourers from the pastoral runs on the high country side of the Barossa Range, as well as the timber cutters and saw millers. In 1857, a man named Lewis Johnstone traded a mob of horses for the hotel and surrounding land, subdivided a town around it, and named it after his eldest son, William.
