Adventure Bay, the main township on Bruny Island, is located on a large east-facing bay on the south of the island. It is a two hour drive south of
Hobart. Adventure Bay was named in 1773 for Captain Tobias Furneaux’s ship The Adventure. It has great historic significance as it was the first stopping point for ships crossing the Southern Ocean and was also visited by Captains Cook, Bligh, D’Entrecasteaux and Tobin in the same century. The area was used by whalers in the early 1800s and was the birthplace of the last of the Tasmanian Aborigines. Adventure Bay Beach is popular for swimming and there are numerous scenic walks in the area and in South Bruny National Park. At the right time of year, southern right whales can be seen swimming off the coastline.
