Popular holiday spot rich in European and Aboriginal history.
Bruny Island is a popular day trip from Kettering, just a 15-minute ferry ride away. It has many natural and historic features and for those who want to stay longer there is plenty of accommodation in the villages and settlements. A narrow land bridge connects North Bruny, with its open paddocks and drier climate, to South Bruny, with its sandy beaches, rainforest bushwalks and wildlife.
The main townships are Lunawanna and Alonnah, derived from the name Lunawannaalonna, which was what the original Aboriginal inhabitants called their home. The Cape Bruny Lighthouse at the southern end of the island is the second oldest lighthouse in Australia, dating from 1838.
