The village of Derwent Bridge grew up around a hotel and guest house built for travellers heading in the direction of the west coast. The original settlement was also a camp for workers building the Lyell Highway.
Close to the geographic centre of Tasmania and at the southern boundary of the Cradle Mountain – Lake St Clair National Park, the town is named for the bridge which spans the Derwent River close to its headwaters at Lake St Clair. Derwent Bridge is just 5km from the visitor services area at Cynthia Bay and its position between Lake St Clair and Lake King William make it an ideal base for exploring the surrounding national parks, and for trout fishing.
Derwent Bridge is surrounded by extensive highland eucalypt forests in a wilderness setting near the peaks of Mt Rufus, Mt Olympus and Mt King William.
