Dover can legitimately claim to be the southernmost town of significance in Australia, being the most southern outlet for petrol and supplies. Located 83km south of
Hobart on the Huon Highway, it progressed from a convict station to a sawmilling town, and was an important port for exporting huon pine. The town is currently supported by fruit growing and fishing, being the site of reputedly the largest salmon farm in the Southern Hemisphere.
It sits in a delightfully picturesque setting on Port Esperance, with views across the water to the islands of Faith, Hope and Charity. There are a number of historic graves on Faith Island.
