Eaglehawk Neck, the narrow isthmus linking the Forestier and Tasman Peninsulas, is noted for its eye-catching geographical features, the same attributes that once made it one of the most notorious locations in
Australia. In the 18th century a military station was established here to secure the prisoners incarcerated on the Tasman Peninsula. A line of tethered, ferocious dogs plus armed guards waited for any convicts attempting to escape from
Port Arthur. Today ‘The Neck’ is better known for its game fishing and visitor accommodation, but echoes of the convict era remain. The barracks building once used by the guards is now a museum and a recreation of the dog-line can be seen nearby. Eaglehawk Neck is part of Tassie’s fascinating ‘Convict Trail’ and the waters around the coast are some of the finest temperate dive waters in the world.
