Like most towns in this part of
Tasmania, Fingal was established as a convict station, but is more famous as the location of the first payable gold in Tasmania. Today it is regarded as the headquarters of the state's coal industry. The traditional art of coal shovelling has been preserved here with the World Coal Shovelling Championships held each March at the Fingal Festival. The beauty of the surrounding district has been an inspiration to writers and poets, and the town is believed to have been named after Fingal's Cave in the Hebrides.
