Australia’s oldest town, at the mouth of the Tamar River
51km North of Launceston
George Town is Australia's oldest town, settled in 1804, and the port for the high-speed Bass Strait catamaran service that operates between December and April. George Town is one of the largest towns in the Tamar Valley, and it has well developed recreational and tourist facilities and is part of the Tamar Valley Wine Route. The Mount George Semaphore Station at Low Head was set up in 1805 to guide ships into the Tamar River; it now houses a maritime museum with fascinating memorabilia salvaged from the many shipwrecks along the north coast.
