George Town is
Australia's oldest town, settled in 1804, and the port for the high-speed Bass Strait catamaran service that operates between December and April. As one of the largest towns in the Tamar Valley, it has well developed recreational and visitor facilities and is part of the Tamar Valley Wine Route. The Mount George Semaphore Station at Low Head was established in 1805 to guide ships into the Tamar River; today it houses a maritime museum with fascinating memorabilia salvaged from the many shipwrecks along the north coast.
