Hamilton is a classified historic town located in the Derwent Valley on the banks of the Clyde River. In its heyday during the convict era it was a bustling town with two breweries, seven inns, stone quarries and three agricultural implement makers, and today it is a quiet hamlet full of charming colonial sandstone buildings. In the mid 1880s Hamilton was a major country centre with squares, an esplanade, a circus and a municipal reserve; its main appeal now is historic, as a place for a pleasant stroll or for a picnic in a park beside the river, or as a stopover for a journey between Hobart and the west coast.
