A rich farming and grazing area, the Midlands was one of the first regions settled in
Tasmania. Tasmania’s Heritage Highway between
Hobart, and
Launceston follows the route pioneered in 1807; before then all supplies between the two cities were transported by sea. With bushrangers roaming the countryside, garrison stations were established to protect the travellers, and to act as staging posts for horse drawn carriages and the transportation of convicts. Many of these stations grew into townships and today they have significant historic value, with an amazing array of period architecture.

The region is also testament to the labour of its settlers, farmers and explorers, and the convicts who quarried and shaped the stone for bridges and churches, and there are colourful tales of the state’s most infamous bushrangers who accosted travellers on this route.
