The gateway to Bruny Island, located on the Channel Highway.
37km S of Hobart
Kettering serves a large fruit-growing district in Tasmania's south-east. It is best known as the ferry terminal for historic Bruny Island, where Captain Bligh is said to have planted the state’s first apple trees during the 1700s. This part of Tasmania was visited by more explorers than any other part of Australia. The Visitor Information Centre on the waterfront at Kettering offers the Mermaid Café (licensed) and a retail outlet with a wide range of Tasmanian books and fine wines. The ferry that makes the 20-minute trip to the island leaves from picturesque Little Oyster Cove.
