Historic town renowned for bicycle racing
9km South-east of Devonport, 90km North-west of Launceston
The Mersey River with its willow-lined banks flows through the classified historic town of Latrobe with its quaint turn-of-the-century streetscapes. Latrobe is the home of the oldest bicycle racing club, established in 1896, and now hosts Australia’s biggest cycling carnival, the Latrobe Wheel and the Latrobe Gift, in December each year. It can also boast Australia’s oldest brass band (formed in 1872) and the venue for the first axeman's carnival for wood-chopping events. Recently Latrobe has established a reputation for its first-class restaurants and specialty boutiques. There is also a range of quality accommodation in Georgian and Victorian mansions and cosy colonial cottages.
