New Norfolk is one of the towns founded in 1807 by displaced settlers from Norfolk Island. Located on the banks of the upper Derwent, the New Norfolk is characterised by its stately English trees, quaint colonial buildings and hop fields. The impressive weatherboard Oust House is the only hop museum in the Southern Hemisphere.
While New Norfolk still produces most of the hops for Australian breweries, the chief industry supporting the district is now paper manufacture; the huge newsprint mills at Boyer, 3km away, were the first in the world to manufacture newsprint from hardwood.
