Orford, on the Prosser River estuary, has the sort of weather that is perfect for year-round boating, swimming, scuba diving, and fishing. Orford is also a great place for bushwalkers, with many interesting walks in the area including a boardwalk through a 20ha stand of rainforest at Sandspit Forest Reserve.
Maria Island, 15km off the coast, was the first penal colony established in Tasmania in 1825. The ferry to Maria Island leaves Louisville near Orford. Maria Island National Park is well known for its abundant animal and birdlife, and is the only national park in Tasmania where all 11 of the state’s endemic bird species can be seen.
