Saltwater River
Saltwater River, 23km from Port Arthur, is the hidden treasure of the Tasman Peninsula. Though little more than a hamlet, it is certainly as interesting to visit as Port Arthur, and with a sense of desolation and isolation that makes the experience powerful and poignant.
Two quite different penal outstations were established at Saltwater River. One was an agricultural farm supplying food for Port Arthur and other outstations on the Peninsula, while the other was a coal mine, widely regarded as 'hell on earth'.
