Located midway between
Hobart and
Launceston on the Heritage Highway, Ross is arguably
Australia’s finest convict-built village. Nestled on the banks of the Macquarie River, it has managed to avoid the corruption of tourism and commercialism and retains its 19th century English character. The pride of this historic town is the 1836 convict-built sandstone bridge with its intricately carved arches. Another distinctive feature is the town’s main crossroads that represent the four characters of life: Temptation (Man O’Ross Hotel), Recreation (Town Hall), Salvation (Catholic Church) and Damnation (jail, now a residence). The district is famous for its superfine merino wool.
