ounded in 1886 after gold was discovered in the area, Sheffield nestles among the foothills of the Great Western Tiers, with the southern horizon dominated by the 1234m Mt Roland. This area is considered one of the most scenic in the state, with mountain gorges and rainforests, streams and rivers well stocked with fish, and peaceful farmlands.
A feature which draws visitors to the town is its streetscape art gallery of spectacular murals, painted by professional artists, which depict its pioneering history, geography, wildlife and the people of north west Tasmania.
Sheffield is the gateway to the renowned Lake Barrington International Rowing Course, which is part of the Lake Barrington and Mersey-Forth hydroelectric developments and Cradle Mountain National Park.
