Gateway to the Tasman Peninsula and east coast
26km East of Hobart
Sorell was founded in 1821 and was originally considered as a contender for Tasmania's capital. It played an important part in early colonial history, providing grain for most of the colony and also to the colony of New South Wales for more than 20 years. The town has a rich history and exploration will reveal a wealth of historic buildings and a number of excellent art, craft and antique shops. The area is an important agricultural district specialising in sheep, dairying, mixed farming and forestry. It is also the location of one of the island's famous berry farms, producing an amazing variety of berries.
