Triabunna started life in the 1800s as a garrison town for the penal colony on Maria Island. Located on the far reaches of Spring Bay, it has seen whaling stations, sandstone quarries and other industries in its past but now is a town driven largely by its fishing industry. The area is renowned for its scallops, crayfish and abalone and its beaches are popular for fishing and surfing. Triabunna is the location of the huge Gunns' Limited woodchip mill and shiploading facility and also once boasted the largest apple orchard in the Southern Hemisphere.
