Zeehan is a National Trust historic town with a fascinating 'boom and bust' history. Located in the heart of Tasmania's west coast mining heritage area, in 1910 Zeehan was a booming silver mining town known as Silver City and the third largest settlement in Tasmania. Fifty years later, when the ore bodies were exhausted, it was almost a ghost town.
In its heyday, Zeehan boasted 26 hotels, its own Stock Exchange, the finest and largest theatre in Australia and a hectic social life. The reopening of the Renison Bell tin mine in 1965 injected new stability into the town's economy, and today its residents and visitors can relive its jaunty history with many buildings restored and recycled as museums and shops.
