Apollo Bay Travel Guide

The long curving beach around Apollo Bay is the setting for this picturesque fishing town of the same name. The bay was named after the schooner Apollo, which carried wool from
Port Fairy to
Melbourne in the 1840s. The treacherous seas off Apollo Bay have claimed many large ships. Point Bunbury, which protects the bay from heavy swells, was once the site of a whaling station, but now has a much more peaceful existence as the site of one of the most picturesque golf courses in Victoria.
Today Apollo Bay is the centre of a rich dairying and fishing area, and the base for a huge fish-freezing plant. It is also a popular summer beach resort, with the wooded mountainous hinterland providing a majestic backdrop to the white-sand beaches, and excellent sea and river fishing.
