The 1850s goldrush brought about momentous changes in
Australia - fabulous wealth, rapid population growth and development, and political upheaval. It opened up the centre of
Victoria and today the evidence of this frenetic era can be seen in the majestic Victorian architecture, cultural treasures and grand gardens of historic towns of
Bendigo,
Ballarat,
Castelmaine and
Maryborough.
The Goldfields region has more than its share of museums, and also boasts a remarkable concentration of exceptional art galleries. Ballarat is one of Australia’s best preserved historic towns. It was the site of the famous 1854 miners rebellion, the Eureka Stockade, and now provides a trip back in time with the recreated goldmining town of Sovereign Hill complete with people in period dress and horse drawn vehicles. Bendigo displays reminders of the sizeable Chinese presence in the goldfields, and the ‘time capsule’ town of
Maldon is almost unchanged in appearance from goldrush times. One of the region’s historically significant towns is the tiny town of
Clunes where in 1851 gold discoveries triggered the rush to Victoria. While its fine civic buildings and museum are reminders of its heyday, a tree planting program when mining ceased has turned it into one of Victoria’s prettiest towns.
