The spectacular Great Ocean Road follows the south-west coast of
Victoria for 240km from
Torquay to
Warrnambool.
As well as having one of the country’s most scenic routes, the region also offers dense rainforests, volcanic plains, dramatic crater lakes, historic towns and charming coastal villages. The Great Ocean Road’s most famous landmarks are the sandstone sea-stacks, the Twelve Apostles, whose constantly changing silhouettes are evidence of the relentless battering of the ocean and the elements.
The Great Ocean Road has three distinct sections – the Surf Coast from
Geelong to
Apollo Bay, the lush green world of the Otway Ranges, and the Shipwreck Coast from
Princetown to Warrnambool. National Parks and walking trails in each section provide opportunities to experience the forests, wildflowers, natural rock formations and historic features of this dramatic region. Loch Ard Gorge, in Port Campbell National Park, was the location of both a tragic wreck and the remarkable survival of two of those on board; its history can now be explored with a themed walking trail.
