Recreation

  • Bushwalking and camping in the Otway National Park, 13km south-west.  Within the park, Shelley Beach and Elliot River are popular picnic and barbecue areas.
  • Maits Rest Rainforest Boardwalk, also within the Otway Ranges National Park, a 20-minute walk along elevated boardwalks through a spectacular rainforest gully.
  • An introduction to the area’s natural and historical features with the 2.5km self-guided Discovery Walk around the western headland area, about one hour’s duration.
  • The annual Port Fairy Folk Festival, one of Australia’s foremost folk festivals held on the Labour Day long weekend in March.

Historic Attractions

  • Cape Otway Lighthouse, built in 1848 on a cliff 78m above sea level.
  • Spectacular views from the walking tracks to Carisbrook Falls.
  • The Loch Ard Shipwreck Museum, with an interesting collection of shipwreck relics and a video on the sinking of the Loch Ard, open daily.  This museum also has a café and a booking office for fishing and scubadiving charters, and cruises to the Twelve Apostles and Bay of Islands.
  • The Mahogany Ship Walk between Port Fairy and Warrnambool, a 22km uninterrupted walking track past the site where the mysterious Mahogany Ship is thought to be buried.
  • The historic Proudfoot’s Boathouse, old boathouse on the Hopkins River at Warrnambool, classified by the National Trust and restored as a restaurant, bar and teahouse
  • Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum. Overlooking Lady Bay, it is a re-creation of a 19th century port, with original lighthouses, replicas of town buildings, restored ships and a whaling boat, sailmaker’s loft, shipwrights and blacksmith’s workshops, and a small theatre which screens old maritime film and documentaries.

Natural Wonders

  • Exploring the natural wonders of the Port Campbell National Park, a narrow coastal strip from Princetown to Peterborough which takes in the Twelve Apostles rock formation (12km south-east), Loch Ard Gorge (7km south-east) and The Arch (6km west).  Short walking trails around the Loch Ard Gorge lead to the cemetery and other interesting formations including the Blowhole and Elephant Rock.
  • Mutton Bird Island, just off the coast, home to a large colony of short-tailed shearwaters (mutton birds) from Sept – April.  The best times for viewing the rookeries are dawn or dusk.
  • Tower Hill State Game Reserve, a wildlife haven located in a massive volcanic crater.  The climb to Tower Hill peak offers sweeping views of the ocean and surrounding farmland.
  • Hopkin’s Falls, 13km north-east of Warrnambool, which is known as Little Niagara and has migrating eels in spring and summer.
