Hamilton, known as the ‘Wool Capital of the World’, is a sizable rural centre wedged in a broad deep valley between the Great Ocean Road and the Grampians, Victoria. Located on a volcanic basalt plain, the area is rich with aboriginal history – before European settlement, Hamilton lay on the edge of three Aboriginal tribal territories, belonging to the Gunditjmara of the south, the Tjapwurong of the north and the Bunganditj of the west. The story is an ultimately tragic one, but Hamilton has a rich and interesting history.
There are lots to see and do in Hamilton, including the Big Woolbales which lay testament to the wool industry's economic assistance to the area. Wool treatment, the manufactories, engineering and sawmilling are also major industries in Hamilton. The town is thought to be named after Hamilton near Glasgow, due to the large numbers of Scottish settlers.
