Cultural Attractions and Recreation

  • The Bataluk Cultural Trail, a self-guided tour of the Aboriginal heritage sites in the East Gippsland area.  Maps and guides available from the visitor information centre.
  • In Bairnsdale, the Krowathunkoolong Keeping Place, an Aboriginal cultural centre and museum with displays focusing on the heritage of the East Gippsland Kooris.

National Parks  

  • Howitt Park in Bairnsdale, with barbecues and an excellent playground complete with flying fox, walk-bridge, foot-swing and BMX track.  A feature of the park is an Aboriginal canoe tree, with a 4m long scar made around 170 years ago when bark was stripped from the tree to make a canoe.
  • East Gippsland Rail Trail, starting from Howitt Park and leading to Bruthven, 30km away.
  • Bushwalking in the Mitchell River National Park, 15km west, renowned for its walking trails and the Den of Nargun, an Aboriginal cultural site.
  • Exploring the Croajingolong National Park, a designated World Biosphere Reserve with 87,500ha of wilderness with remote beaches, inlets, estuaries and forests. Popular activities include camping, bushwalking, mountain biking, canoeing and surfing. The park is a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 300 recorded species of bird.  

Museums and Historical Attractions

  • The shell museum in Lakes Entrance, one of Australia’s largest, with sea shells, an aquarium and a model railway.

Natural Wonders

  • Excellent views of the lakes, town and ocean from Jemmy’s Point Lookout at the west end of town over North Arm Bridge.  Spectacular views at night.
  • A 2.3km walk along the Ninety Mile Beach from the footbridge at Cunningham Arm to the entrance to the lakes. Paddle boats, sailing craft and canoes are available for hire by the footbridge.
  • Great fishing and boating in the Mallacoota Inlet. Boat and equipment hire available.
