The mountainous north-east of
Victoria, known as the High Country, is a spectacular region of peaks, alpine plains and forested slopes.
Once the haunt of the famous Ned Kelly gang and the 'Man from Snowy River', this part of Australia is better known now for its outdoor pursuits and historic towns. There are hundreds of kilometres of magnificent walking tracks for bushwalkers, mountain bikers and horse-riders, and double as cross-country ski trails during the winter months. The best known of these is the Australian Alps Walking Trail, part of which crosses the Bogong High Plains where huts built a century ago by cattlemen still stand.
In the foothills, the old goldmining towns of
Beechworth,
Yackandandah,
Bright and
Omeo have historic buildings and fascinating reminders of some of the countries toughest and most remote goldfields. The Great Alpine Road, from
Wangaratta to
Bairnsdale, is a popular touring route through this area.
