Histoic & Cultural Attractions

  • Bright and District Historical Museum, located in the old train station building.
  • National Trust classified hamlet, Wandiligong, located in a valley 6km south-east of Bright. Self guided tours along Morse Creek and past the remaining buildings of this goldmining shanty town.
  • The Canyon Walk which takes in the remains of gold workings along the Ovens River.
  • Horse trail rides, from a few hours to many days long, through the famous Man from Snowy River country.
  • Beechworth – Victoria’s best preserved gold town with 32 buildings classified by the National Trust. Of historic interest are the town’s Courthouse and Gaol which have associations with Ned Kelly and members of his gang, bush ranger Harry Power and Police Superintendent Robert O’Hara Burke.  There are some scenic bushwalks and boutique wineries in the area.
  • A 4WD, horseback or mountain bike trek to Craig’s Hut, on the Clear Hills near Mount Stirling, used in the filming of The Man from Snowy River.  No vehicle access in winter.
  • Exploring the historic gold township of Eldorado, which has a museum, potteries and the largest gold dredge in the southern hemisphere, built in 1936.

Recreation

  • Trout fishing and gold fossicking in the Howqua, Jamieson and Goulburn Rivers to the south.
  • The Legends, Wine and High Country Food and Wine Trail, with various styles of accommodation, bars, restaurants and food outlets to suit all budgets.
  • Whitewater rafting on the King, Mitta and Snowy Rivers.
  • Bushwalking, picnics and birdwatching in the Warby Range State Park, 12km west.
  • Fishing and gem fossicking at Reid’s Creek.
  • Scenic drives to King Valley and Paradise Falls, and along the King River to Whitfield and Powers Lookout.
