Melbourne City Shopping and Dining
Melbourne is Australia's fashion capital, with an enormous selection of clothes and accessories outlets. There are numerous shopping districts from large department store malls and small boutiques tucked away in lanes and alleys, to the upmarket shops of
South Yarra and
Toorak. In the city, Collins Street has many designer label boutiques and exclusive stores in a network that encompasses the arcades and alleyways of Bourke, Swanston and Spring Streets. Bargain hunters should head for the
Queen Victoria Markets or the factory outlets and seconds shops along Bridge Road and Swan Street in
Richmond.
With one third of the population born overseas, or having parents born overseas, the multicultural flavour of Melbourne's population is celebrated by the city's vibrant restaurant culture. Many of the world's great cuisines are represented, often in particular areas. Head to Chinatown in the city for Asian cuisine, Lonsdale Street in the city for Greek dining, Lygon Street in
Carlton for Italian, Victoria Street in Richmond for Vietnamese or Brunswick and Johnston Streets in Fitzroy for Asian, Turkish, Indian, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern Cuisine. Acland Street in
St Kilda is famous for its delicatessens and cake shops. The largest concentration of bars, restaurants and cafés are also in this area.
