The Gippsland region stretches from the Gippsland Lakes west to Phillip Island and south to
Wilsons Promotory. It covers beautiful landscapes of fertile countryside and is full of natural wonders from mountains and forests to rivers and beaches. The southern-most point of mainland Australia, Wilsons Promotory is an unspoilt wilderness with prolific wildlife and birdlife, now protected as a national park.
Connected to the mainland via the sandy plain of
Yanakie Isthmus, there is vehicle access to Tidal River, the main tourist facility and origin for many of the well-maintained walking trails that criss-cross the park’s rugged landscape. Wilson’s Promotory Marine Park protects the surrounding waters and their diverse sea creatures, and provides wonderful diving opportunities. Phillip Island is famous for its nightly Penguin Parade when hundreds of tiny penguins emerge from the sea and make their way past hundreds of human spectators to their burrows at Summerland Beach. Nearby Seal Rocks is home to the world's largest fur seal colony.
