Gippsland

  • Bushwalking and picnics in Morwell National Park, in the foothills of the Strzelecki Ranges. The park has a range of vegetation over 280ha of steep hilly terrain, is home to an abundance of koalas and birdlife, and is renowned for its orchids.
  • Powerworks Museum and Visitor Centre, at Morwell, with models and displays on the LaTrobe Valley’s coalmining and power-generating industries, and guided tours of the Morwell open-cut mine and the Hazelwood Power Station. 
  • Baw Baw National Park, 95km north of Moe, for bushwalking and camping in summer, and cross-country skiing in winter.

Wilsons Promotory

  • Bushwalking
    with more than 30 walks covering 130km of tracks. Walks range from the wheelchair-friendly Loo-Errn Track to the Prom Circuit Walk (45km) which takes two to three days. Some of the more popular walks are the Mt Oberon Nature Walk (6.5km), the Sealers Cove Track (19km), the Lilly Pilly Gully Nature Walk (5km) and the Squeaky Beach Nature Walk (5km).
  • Tidal River Village
    The Tidal River Village offers the only vehicle access to the park and where the Park Information Centre, accommodation, general store and café are located.  There are 500 camp sites and a range of huts and cabins, which should be booked in advance with Parks Victoria.  More remote bush camp sites, with pit toilets and fresh water are accessed by walking tracks.
  • Lighthouse
    Tours of the lighthouse, an 18km trek from Tidal River.
  • Birdwatching
    Excellent birdwatching opportunities.  Tidal River is famous for its population of friendly rosellas, and the inlets are visited by migratory species.
  • Water activities
    Water activities including swimming, surfing, snorkelling and scubadiving.

Phillip Island

  • Penguin Parade
    The nightly Penguin Parade at Summerland Beach. Some 30,000 penguins live in the waters around Phillip Island and every night about 3000 come ashore and make their way to their burrows past the hundreds of spectators who converge on the floodlit beach. At the Penguin Parade Visitor Centre, tourists can see penguins nesting in simulated burrows.
  • Seal Rocks
    Off the western tip of Phillip Island, the home to the world’s largest colony of fur seals. Seal Rocks Sea Life Centre offers 180 degree panoramic views, displays and guided walks of the seabird habitat and intertidal rock shelf.  Excellent restaurant and kiosk.
  • Phillip Island Nature Park
    Opportunities to view wildlife in its natural habitat. The Phillip Island Nature Park has over 900 animals in a free range environment. At the Koala Conservation Centre, raised boardwalks give visitors a treetop view of the koalas.  Western Port is a playground for dolphins, and whales can also be spotted in Bass Strait.
  • Beaches
    Swimming and surfing at the 26 beaches around the island.
  • Cape Woolamai
    Stunning sea views, interesting geological formations and abundant wildlife at Cape Woolamai, the highest point on the island and a state fauna reserve.  There is a 3km walk to the summit taking in the Colonnades, Pinnacles, Forrest Caves, the granite quarry and the cliffs where a number of shearwater (mutton bird) rookeries are located. 
  • Woolamai Surf Beach 
    Renowned for its good surf and strong currents and a surf life-saving club provides supervised swimming areas.
  • Birdwatching
    Great birdwatching, a feature being the thousands of shearwaters (mutton birds) who migrate annually from Alaska. The colony is best viewed from Cape Woolamai or the birdwatching platform at Forrest Caves between November and April.
  • Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit.  Best known for the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, but also the venue for other motorcycle classics, V8 and historic car races.  The Circuit Visitor Centre is open seven days a week and its memorabilia, video footage and relics trace the progress of motor racing in Australia.
  • Bushwalking
    For all levels of fitness. Walks include the 8km Cape Woolamai Walk, the 6km (one way) George Bass Coastal Walk from San Remo to Kilcunda, and the 5km walk around Churchill Island.
