The peaceful town of Swan Hill is located halfway between Echuca and Mildura, on the Murray Valley Highway.
The low hill on which the town sits was named by explorer Major Thomas Mitchell in 1836, after he was kept awake all night by black swans on the nearby lagoon. The area was settled by sheep graziers soon after, and with the arrival of the first paddle-steamers in 1853, the township became a busy river port.
Today Swan Hill is a major regional centre surrounded by fertile irrigated farms, and with the river and nearby lakes offering good fishing, boating and watersports, is also a major holiday destination.
