One of
Victoria's largest coastal cities, 263km west of
Melbourne on the Great Ocean Road, Warrnambool had its beginnings as a whaling and sealing station. The shallow water of Logans Beach is a major nursery for the rare Southern Right whales, who migrate here between May and October to breed.
The town was first called Warnimble, an Aboriginal word for 'plenty of water'. As early as 1802, French navigator noted Lady Bay as a site suitable for a lighthouse and a safe harbour. Since then the Warrnambool coast has seen more than 100 shipwrecks.
Today Warrnambool is primarily an industrial and commercial centre, with woollen mills and a major clothing manufacturing factory, but its relaxed seaside atmosphere makes it a popular summer holiday destination.
