History
Perth was settled on the banks of the Swan River in 1829 by the British as a colony for free settlers. The first decade proved to be tough, so the British government sent convicts to provide much-needed labour for building roads and buildings. Gold rushes in the late 1800s sealed the future for the state, and today Perth is known for its many grand homes and millionaire residents.
