Things to Do in Aitutaki

  • Aitutaki Lagoon
Aitutaki’s beautiful lagoon provides an underwater spectacle of coloured corals and tropical fish. Above the ocean, there are numerous coral ridges and motu (islets) to discover, and a range of watersports to enjoy.
  • Cruising
Take one of the cruises out to the nearby islets for an idyllic day of picnicking and snorkelling on your own private island.
  • Fishing
The surrounding waters of Aitutaki lagoon are home to an abundance of fish including tuna, wahoo, marlin and barracuda. The Game Fishing Club is located in Arutanga by the wharf, and is open from 4pm until late from Wednesday to Saturday. Baxter's Fishing Tours offer guided charter tours.
  • Diving
Dive into Aitutaki’s warm, clear waters for some of the best diving in the Pacific – you'll get to see turtles and some of the really big fish. There are two local operators in Aitutaki – Aitutaki Scuba and Bubbles Below, each providing half-day trips.
  • Island Tours
Discover Aitutaki's highlights with Aitutaki Island Discovery Tours and Paradise Islands Tours.
  • Mount Maungapu (124m)
This local landmark is Aitutaki’s highest point – take the easy 30 minute walk to the top for superb views over the island and lagoon.
  • Historic Sites
Historic places to visit include the marae sites of Te-Poaki-O-Rae (The Stone of Rae).
  • Vaipae and Tautu Villages
Lying on the eastern side of Aitutaki, these pleasant villages feature old coral and lime churches. Outside the villages are secluded areas of natural beauty where footpaths lead through palms to pristine beaches.
  • Ministry of Marine Resources
Near Aitutaki's airport is the Ministry of Marine Resources, another interesting place to visit. There are five species of giant clams here, as well as baby sea turtles. The research station is open weekdays and offers guided tours.
  • Tapuaetai (One Foot) Motu
The stunning motu of Tapuaetai is the perfect spot for picnicking and snorkelling - you can even have your passport stamped at the world’s smallest post office.
  • Maina (Little Girl) Motu
The clear waters around Maina are great for snorkelling and, from November to February, you will see large sea turtles ashore basking in the sun. Maina is also the nesting place of the red-tailed tropic bird (tavake), whose feathers are used in traditional Cook Islands headdresses.
