Mangaia Things to Do

Mangaia highlights, things to see and do in Mangaia, Mangaia activities, attractions, and points of interest - the ALL NEW Jasons Mangaia Things to Do Guide is your complete guide to sightseeing in Mangaia.

Attractions

  • Cave Tours
The erosion of the limestone makatea has resulted in remarkable rock formations and numerous caves, some hundreds of metres in length. The largest and most spectacular is Te Rua Rere, which was used as an ancient burial chamber. Tuatini cave also has several intact skeletons. Both caves can be visited with guides.
  • Hiking
The spectacular scenery makes hiking around Mangaia an unforgettable experience, and there are guided walks through the bush-clad makatea.
  • Fishing
Mangaia's lagoon is rich in colourful tropical fish, and reef and offshore fishing trips can be arranged.
  • Onerua Village
Located on the west coast, the village is split on two levels between the makatea, with a huge pass carved between the two levels.
  • Adventure
Activities include rock climbing, diving in the deep freshwater caves, snorkelling, 4WD cross-island tours, horse riding, and beach and inland picnic tours.
