Rarotonga, and is said to be one of the group’s loveliest islands. Polynesians are believed to have lived on Manihiki since at least 1500 AD, although it was not discovered by Europeans until 1822, when it was sighted by the US ship Good Hope and named Humphrey Island.
Manihiki sits atop an underwater mountain rising 4000m above the ocean floor. The stunning 4km-wide lagoon is laced with 40 tiny motu (islets) which are strung out along the reef. Tauhunu, on the western coast, is renowned for its pearl carvers and for the Fare Ariki – one of the old houses still standing after Hurricane Martin struck in November 1997. Flying time to Manihiki is about 4 hours (Air Rarotonga advises that flights to Manahiki are dependent on bookings). Travel to Manihiki and discover the Island of Pearls.
